Renovation
Home renovation checklist for couples: plan, budget, survive
Updated · by the Simpleban team
In short
Renovations strain couples because decisions pile up, trades need answers today, and one person ends up as the project manager. The fix is the same as on a building site: a visible plan with an owner for every item. Below is the checklist — planning, permissions and quotes, order of works, living through it, snagging — and how to run it on a shared board where every decision is a card one of you owns, the trades' questions become handoffs, and the move-back-in date is a countdown.

Planning
- Agree the scope and the number you'll both be honest about. Write both down.
- Priorities in order: what has to happen, what you'd like, what can wait.
- Measure everything. Photograph everything.
- Decide who is the point of contact for the trades (one person; alternate by project if you like).
Permissions and quotes
- Check planning permission, building regulations, listed-building or leasehold consent.
- Three quotes for each trade: a card per trade, split between you.
- References checked, insurance seen, payment schedule agreed in writing.
- Order long-lead items early: windows, kitchen, bathroom, flooring.
Order of works
| Stage | Typical order |
|---|---|
| Strip out | Demolition, skips, make safe |
| First fix | Structural, plumbing, electrics, plastering |
| Second fix | Kitchen, bathroom, flooring, doors, sockets |
| Finish | Painting, lighting, fixtures |
| Snagging | The list of everything that isn't quite right |
Living through it
- A weekly repeating card: walk the site together, update the board, decide the week's decisions.
- Trades' questions as cards handed to whoever owns the decision, with a due date of today.
- Keep a “Decisions made” column so nobody relitigates the tile.
- Budget check as a monthly repeating card (the board tracks the task; the spreadsheet tracks the money).
On a shared board
The Home renovation template has Planning · Quotes · In progress · Snagging · Done with starter cards. Add the countdown to move-back-in, put due dates on the delivery and inspection dates, and hand cards between you — the morning email makes sure the plumber's question doesn't wait a week.

Questions, answered
- How do couples avoid fighting during a renovation?
- Decide the scope and the budget in writing first, give every decision a single owner, and have a fixed weekly moment to make the week's decisions together instead of in the hallway with a builder waiting.
- In what order should a renovation happen?
- Strip out, first fix (structure, plumbing, electrics, plaster), second fix (kitchen, bathroom, floors, doors), finishes, then snagging.
- Is there a free app to manage it?
- Simpleban's Home renovation template is free for two people — cards for every decision and trade, due dates, a countdown and handoffs.
